MARGAO: A fire erupted on Saturday morning at a garage in Margao that primarily conducts automobile bodywork and dent-repair, resulting in extensive damage to furniture, machinery, and vehicle parts.
Firefighters from the Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the scene, aided by
neighbors and nearby shopkeepers who attempted to extinguish the flames.
The garage, located in close proximity to La Flor Hotel in Margao, required several hours of effort by firefighters to bring the blaze under control.
According to Margao Fire Officer Gil Souza De Souza, the fire was sparked when a worker was performing exterior car repair work, and a gas leak of oxyacetylene ignited, spreading into the shop.
However, some individuals in the vicinity claimed that a discarded cylinder also caught fire, exacerbating the damage. The fire produced significant amounts of smoke that billowed from the shop for an extended period.
Local residents voiced concerns about the garage’s location in a residential area and demanded that it be relocated to a safer site.
They cited previous instances when they had raised alarms about the hazards associated with welding work being conducted in such close proximity to regular pedestrian traffic.
