SANGUEM: A major fire incident at the old market complex at Sanguem was thwarted in the late evening hours on Thursday due to timely intervention of Chairperson of Sanguem Municipal Council Romualdo Fernandes and the locals.
The incident occurred at about 10.30 in the night when some unknown person allegedly put fire to the plastic and other marketable items owned by one Jaffar Shaikh who had stacked the same in the market after the Wednesday market.
The fire incident was immediately brought to the notice of the SMC Chairperson Romualdo, who wasted no time and reached the site with some locals and doused the fire before it could spread to the nearby shops. A fire brigade was also summoned by Romualdo.
The fire also damaged the ceilings and some other materials of the adjacent shops owned by Divkar and Ramesh Marathe.
While the loss sustained by Divkar and Marathe was minimal, Jaffar estimated the loss suffered by him to be around Rs 40,000.
Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar and Chief Officer SMC John Fernandes accompanied by Romualdo visited the incident place Friday morning to ascertain the amount of damage caused.
During the visit, Sanguem MLA Gaonkar directed the police to investigate the cause of fire and the person behind the incident based on the CCTV footage of the adjoining shop owners.
