CANACONA: Close on the heels of an Olive Ridley turtle nesting at Galgibaga Beach, the Agonda Beach also witnessed a mother turtle arriving on the beach on Thursday to lay eggs.
Marine life enthusiasts in Canacona are relieved that Olive Ridley sea turtles have finally begun laying eggs along the coast of Canacona Taluka.
While the mother Olive Ridley which arrived at 4.30 am on Agonda Beach laid eggs close to the incubation enclosures.
“As the turtle nested close to the enclosures we didn’t shift the eggs but cordoned the nest,” said RFO Vikramaditya Naikgaonkar.
Sources informed Herald that forest officials visit these beaches at around 4 am to collect the eggs and then keep them in hatcheries. After hatchlings come out of the eggshells, they are released into the waters sources added.
