PANJIM: Goa Medical College and Hospital reached a milestone on Thursday, by successfully conducting its first open heart surgery after the new cardiothoracic and vascular department began functioning.
Speaking to Herald, Dr Shirish Borkar, chief cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon said that this is only the first of many such surgeries that have been lined up for May. “It is definitely a big achievement for the Goa Medical College. To perform an open heart surgery one requires that all the systems of the new unit should be working properly,” Dr Borkar told Herald.  He said that the unit is in such demand that there are as many as two to three open heart surgeries that are lined up per day until May.
This patient who has had the privilege of being the first open heart surgery is a 28 years old girl from Caranzalem who was born with a hole in her heart.
“While it wasn’t an emergency operation. It was the right time to start the surgeries,” Dr Borkar said.
The Goa Medical College inaugurated its Cardiothoracic and vascular unit in the middle of February and since them has completed around 175 angiographies.
and as many as 47 angioplasties. The unit seeks to   gradually increase the capacity of the ward and the type of surgeries that are being conducted at the Hospital.
