PANJIM: There is good news for fish loving people of Goa. The resumption of fishing activity in the eastern coast of India – coastal belt of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala is likely to bring down the fish rate in the State. Currently the eastern coast is observing the 61 days fishing ban which will end on the 14th of this month.
Meanwhile, the western coast which also includes Goa has just commenced the ban. Speaking to Herald, President of Margao Wholesale Fish Market Association, M Ibrahim said, “No sooner the fishing ban is lifted from the eastern coast, fresh load of fish will arrive in the State from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, which will simultaneously bring down the fish rates in the State.”
Meanwhile another fish trader asserted that, “The fish which is available at Rs 500 per kg will come down to Rs 300 per kg from June 16 onwards.”
Currently Goa’s only wholesale fish market in Margao is getting fish from the traditional non-motorised vessels from Goa and other neighbouring states which are permitted to carry out fishing activity even during the uniform ban of 61 days.
