PANJIM: The Government has framed rules and regulations for formation and usage of a corpus fund to benefit fishermen affected by natural calamities, a notification issued here states.
The notification states that the government was committed to the well being and welfare of the fishermen who toil hard, braving the uncertainty of nature so that the Goan population can have their favourite fish, curry and rice.
The notification is intended to create a corpus fund to support fishermen who venture out to sea and at times are caught unawares due to bad weather conditions many a time losing their lives and property such as nets and canoes.
The size of the corpus fund would be start from Rs 5 crore annually and Rs 25 crore at the end of five years. The yearly contribution will be fixed by the government from time to time and through budgetary support of Rs 3.5 crore as support every year until the target is achieved.
All the fishermen having their fishing vessels registered under the Marine Fishing Regulation Act and who will contribute annual fees towards the corpus fund created by the government will be eligible to avail benefits from the fund.
