Fishing, water sports hit BRICS wall

Government bans activities along parts of South Goa coast close to Summit meeting sites

PANJIM: The State government has banned water sports activities along the South Goa coast from October 14 to 17 in view of the 8th BRICS summit in Goa. The government has also ordered closure of the Betul mini harbour and banned fishing activities during the period. 
The BRICS summit, on October 15 and 16, will bring heads of State and governments from Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa, besides India to the State. The area between Cansaulim to Cavelossim and Betul are adjacent to the hotels that will be hosting the leaders and foreign delegates.
In a notification issued on Thursday, the Captain of Ports directed all the water sports operators from Cansaulim to Cavelossim beaches and in the riverine areas to stop activities from October 14 to 17 for security reasons.
The State Fisheries Department has also directed a stop to activities of trawlers and fishing vessels in and around Betul and the closure of Betul mini Harbour. “Violation of the above will be viewed seriously,” the State government has said.
The State police have begun rehearsals and mock drills for the summit. Besides para military forces, Delhi police is assisting the State in law and order arrangements.
