Five Salcete p’yats witnessed turmoil in first year of 5-yr term

Sarpanchas were voted out in Chinchinim, Raia, Carmona and Davorlim; at Curtorim deputy sarpanch was ousted

MARGAO: With just about one year completing since the village Sarpanch and Deputy Sarpanch were elected, there has been unrest and turmoil in five of the 30 panchayats of Salcete and interestingly four of them are large panchayats having 11 elected members.
While in four village panchayats namely Chinchinim-Deussua, Raia, Carmona and Davorlim-Dicarpale the sarpanch was changed before the panchayat body completed one year, at Curtorim the deputy sarpanch was changed.
It all began with Davorlim Dicarpale Panchayat when Flancy Gomes was ousted as the sarpanch in December last year by moving a no confidence motion against her. Mrs Bina Kulkarni was then elected as the new sarpanch at elections held on January 2, 2018.
This was followed by Winston Dias resigning as the sarpanch of Carmona panchayat and the then Deputy Sarpanch Savita Mascarenhas was elected as sarpanch on February 5, 2018. From the time Savita has taken over as the sarpanch, the post of Deputy Sarpanch has fallen vacant and needs to be filled up.
Then was the case of Raia panchayat as a no confidence motion was moved successfully against Zelia Gonsalves. Mrs Esmeralda Gomes was elected as the new sarpanch of Raia on February 5, 2018.
At Chinchinim-Deussua Panchayat, Flory Pereira suddenly in April 2018 resigned as sarpanch citing personal problems as the reason and on June 11, Inacinha Rebello was elected as the new sarpanch.
Curtorim panchayat was the only one to have its deputy sarpanch voted out of office. Isabela Gomes e Rebello was ousted as the deputy sarpanch on May 28, 2018 as members expressed displeasure over her style of functioning as sarpanch when the sarpanch was on leave.
