Panjim: Transport Minister Ramkrishna Dhavalikar said that installing of digital meters and Global Positioning System (GPS) will be implemented in the State only after the court order.
He said the matter is presently before the court as it was challenged by the taxi operators.
In 2015 an amendment was brought to the Goa Motor Vehicles Rules, 1991, making digital fare meters with printer and a GPS tracking device mandatory in taxis. But despite the amendment, the government has not been able to enforce it as there is tremendous pressure from the taxi owners.
Currently the High Court is hearing the contentions of the taxi operators as well as of the State.
Dhavalikar also said that all the roads in the State will have CCTV coverage. He said that not only highways, but major district roads and even village roads, will be monitored by CCTVs for traffic violations.
“We will be implementing the centrally funded scheme in another year in which all the streets will be covered with cameras which will be installed at all major locations,” the Minister said. He said that in principal the Union Ministry has approved the proposal of the State.
He also said that Transport Department has decided to purchase two interceptor vehicles for traffic enforcement.
