PANJIM: Election Commission has said that they are investigating whether money recovered from parish priest of St Francis Xavier Church, Velim, Fr Romano Gonsalves, was related to elections.
Income Tax department sleuths on Tuesday had raided residence of Fr Gonsalves after they received a complaint against him.
Joint Chief Electoral Officer Narayan Navti said that there was information that Fr Gonsalves was stocking money on behalf of a person.
“We responded to the complaint. Total Rs 6000 was found with him, which was seized,” Navti said adding “investigation is on to know whether it’s poll related.”
Hurt with the sudden raid by the officials and flying squad, the parishioners had set a 48-hours deadline on authorities to answer their queries and to tender a written apology for occurrence of the incident.
