Mauxi Panchayat is one of the backward Panchayats in Sattari Taluka. No proper roads, no street lights and shortage of water are the major problems facing villagers in this panchayat area past two decades.
This Panchayat falls under Poriem constituency and its population is 3740 and total voters are 3147. In this Panchayat there are seven wards, they are Mauxi one, Mauxi two, Zarme, Dabem, Nagvem and Kopardem one and Kopardem two. Panch members are Vatu Gaonkar Sarpanch, Priti Sawant Deputy Sarpanch, Tukaram Gaonkar, Balchandra Gawas, Josna Kale, Vithoba Sawant and Datta Gawas.
Panchayat is backed by BJP, last five years and out of seven panch members, six members are supporting BJP and remaining one is backed by Pratapsing Rane. Panchayat is collecting revenue yearly Rs 25 lakh – Rs 1.4 lakh from house tax, Rs 13 lakh from petrol pump and remaining from rent, says Sarpanch Vatu Gaonkar.
“We are not the owners of land on which we are staying past 50 years. We are staying on Goa Daman and Diu land. In our panchayat area there are 862 houses on government land. So, we are demanding to the new Government to gives us ownership of land,” says panch Tukaram Gaonkar.
The main occupation of people in this Panchayat is agriculture. The people depend on cashew plantation. In this panchayat forest animals are destroying agriculture crops in large numbers. And also there is a fear of KFD disease in this Panchayat. And almost 70 percent of educated youth are unemployed, says panch Datta Gawas.
