MARGAO: Four separate fire incidents were reported across Salcete taluka in a single day, the most serious being a blaze at a seafood canning company at IDC Nessai that caused significant property damage.
Station Fire Officer Gil Souza of Margao Fire Station said the department received a call at 12.41 pm and immediately dispatched one fire tender. On arrival, firefighters found the ground floor of the canning unit engulfed in intense flames, prompting reinforcements from Curchorem and Cuncolim fire stations.
Fifteen personnel battled the blaze for nearly two hours before bringing it under control. Souza said the exact cause remains unknown and the department will write to the electricity department to examine whether an electrical fault triggered the fire.
The estimated loss is Rs 1.50 lakh, while property worth Rs 25 lakh was saved. District Officer Francisco Mendes visited the site. Firefighter RS Khutker played a key role in the operation.
Under Maina Curtorim Police jurisdiction, ASI Anant Gaunker conducted a panchanama. A fire accident case has been registered.
Elsewhere, a garbage heap caught fire near a ground at Rumdamol, Davorlim, and was contained within an hour under Leading Firefighter S P Dessai. A tamarind tree blaze at Zoriwaddo, Chandor, was extinguished by leading Firefighter S K G Dessai. Dry grass and a banana plantation fire at Dharmapur was controlled under Sub-Officer N V Takkar.
Authorities urged residents and industries to exercise caution during dry conditions. Investigations into the Nessai fire continue.
