PANJIM: The Prisons authorities have suspended four jail officials, including the jailor of Colvale Correctional Home, a week after the Departmental Inquiry pointed out to lapses that led to the murder of gangster Ashpaq Bengre.
Jailor Satyavan Tari, assistant jailor Babu Kharvet and two jail guards Nilesh Chari and Sameer Patekar have been suspended. The report had indicted the foursome for lapses.
Bengre, against whom 19 cases were registered in Goa, Karnataka and Punjab, was murdered in the jail premises on July 26. Another under trial, Vinayak Kurbatkar, allegedly involved in almost 13 cases in Goa and Maharashtra has been held for the murder.
Sources said the jail guards did not stop Kurbatkar from entering the other section where he went to allegedly kill Bengre, and that even after this, Kurbatkar roamed freely in the jail premises for nearly an hour.
Moreover, the accused went to the under trial’s section and returned to the mess section wearing blood-stained clothes but no guard on duty stopped him. He later went to the mess where he sat and drank water.
