MARGAO: The mortal remains of Historian Fr Nascimento Mascarenhas were laid to rest at Saligao cemetery after a solemn Mass, on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, the body of Mascarenhas was placed at the Holy Spirit Church in Margao for the Catholic faithful to pay their last respects.
The solemn funeral Mass was attended by hundreds of people, including politicians, tiatrists, besides 85 priests and nuns.
Holy Spirit Church Parish Priest Fr Avinash Rebello was the main celebrant for the Mass at Margao, wherein Fr Eremito Rebello, the parish priest of Our Lady of Snows church, Rachol, in his homily described Fr Nasimento as a great historian who wrote on the churches of Goa and in his death a huge vacuum has occurred.
Fr Lucio Dias, the Episcopal vicar for South Goa, performed the last rites at Holy Spirit Church. Hazel Pereira, a niece of late Fr Nascimento, said that the late priest was spiritual pillar for the family. She also thanked everyone.
