GAKUVED blocks road at Quepem

MARGAO: The Gawda, Kunbi, Velip and Dhangar (Gakuved) Federation, Quepem block along with the farmers of Caurem protested and blocked the trucks transporting iron ore in wake of calls given by different farmers unions across the country.

The protesting farmers of Caurem along with the Gakuved Quepem block had initially requested the two mining companies belonging to Dinar Tarkar and G N Agarwal not carry out iron ore transportation on December 8. The mining companies did not care about the request which led to hurting the sentiments of the farming communities living in Caurem. The youth blocked the trucks carrying iron ore for about two hours. They were holding placards reading “Bharat Bandh”, “Caurem Adivasi Bachao Samiti supports Indian Farmers”, “Withdraw Anti-Farmers Bill” etc

Later, the police personnel from Quepem Police Station led by Police Sub-Inspector Gawas and ASI Divakar Velip arrived at the spot and requested the protesting villagers to keep the road open for local commuters.

After discussion, the protesting villagers released the trucks to avoid any law and order situation. The protesting youth later joined the protest at Margao called by “Goyant Kolso Naka” against the arbitrary anti-farmer bills.

“The incident has shown that the mining companies are cronies of the State government and do not even care about the farming communities. Gakuved openly participated in the ‘Bharat Bandh’ and will always stand in solidarity with the farmers,” said Gakuved Federation.
