MARGAO: Gandhi Market Citizens Welfare Association has threatened to launch a hunger strike opposite the Margao Municipal Council if the authorities fail to address the garbage and traffic menace within a fortnight.
Briefing media persons General Secretary of the Association Shaikh Riyaz said that around 70 families that live near the Gandhi Market suffer terribly due to total lack of administration at the market place.
“Irregular parking is causing terrible problem for us as we cannot even move our vehicles and the absence of garbage management results in we bearing the stench every day,” he said pointing out that even the fire tenders could not find proper access to douse the fire that broke out on Sunday evening.
“Two people have died as the ambulance could not reach their houses to take them to the hospital when they suffered a heart attack,” he said adding that two persons were afflicted with dengue and four with malaria due to the unhygienic conditions prevailing in the market.
He accused the authorities and the municipal council of only targeting poor Goans who sell local vegetables in the Gandhi Market while turning a blind eye to all the illegalities committed by migrants who block pavements by extending their shops.
He said if the authorities do not post personnel to monitor and direct the traffic in Gandhi market and address the garbage issue in the next fortnight, they would sit on a hunger strike in front of the MMC building.
