PANJIM: Congress MLA Atanasio Monserrate expressed displeasure over the manner in which garbage is been dumped on the Campal Parade ground by the Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP), despite the High Court banning the dumping of waste at the site in 2008.
Monserrate also questioned the government’s intention for not looking into his proposal of a land site for garbage disposal on the Taleigao plateau during Question Hour.
Monserrate brought to the notice of the House that Campal Parade ground has become a garbage dumping site for CCP, against whom no action has been initiated by the Pollution Control Board for creating pollution in the vicinity.
Trying to defend CCP’s move to dump garbage, Environment Minister Alina Saldanha said that the corporation does not have an adequate site for disposal and treatment of waste. Hence it has set up several composting units in the city including two at Campal.
“CCP is only dumping horticultural waste at the site,” she claimed, adding that notices have been issued to CCP time and again for creating pollution.
While assuring that there would be inspection of the site proposed by Monserrate for garbage disposal, Alina said that CCP had proposed setting up of more composting units behind Heera Petrol Pump near KTC Terminus, Panjim, thereby reducing the burden on other units.
