PORVORIM: The issues of migrants and garbage dominated the Socorro gram sabha on Sunday.
Speaking on the issue of migrants, Sorter D’Souza and Ifa Vaz said the migrants residing at Socorro in huts and small houses constructed illegally answer nature’s call in the fields. They demanded that it should be made compulsory for the owners of the huts and houses to construct toilets for their tenants. They also said the panchayat does not have details of the tenants in its jurisdiction.
Riva Dalgado said the people throw garbage wherever they want, especially at Socorro. Wilber Ticlo stated that a temple is being constructed illegally at Socorro and requested the panchayat to take action against the illegal constructions.
Some villagers complained about power fluctuations and haphazard parking of vehicles along the highway and improper construction of nallahs.
Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte, who attended the gram sabha, stated that the panchayat should give priority to verification of the tenants in the panchayat area from safety and security point of view. Most of the owners do not cross-check the antecedents of their tenants. He said he spoke to Porvorim Police and requested them to take strict action against the owners who did not furnish details of the tenants.
Khaunte said proposal to set up garbage treatment plant in an area of 5,000 sq mtrs offered by the Serula Comunidade has been sent to the Town and Country Planning department for approval. “Meanwhile, the process of collection of garbage on door-to-door basis is being streamlined and within next six months, most of the garbage woes will be solved,” assured Khaunte.
Khaunte said to reduce accidents on the National Highway 17, he has suggested the State government to erect traffic signals near Holy Family Church, Sangolda-Socorro junction and also zebra crossings for pedestrians. “Construction of bus bays and bus shelter is in progress,” he added.
Earlier, Sarpanch Vaishalli Satardekar welcomed the gathering, Panchayat Secretary Chetan Shirodkar read the minutes of the gram sabha meeting held on February 23. Das Asnodkar proposed the vote of thanks.
