Garbage trucks stuck in the garage

The Margao Municipal Council may boast of owning a fleet of garbage collection vehicles, including a couple of garbage compactors, in the municipal garage at Old Market. Sadly, many waste collecting vehicles, including the compactors, are lying in the garage for want of repairs.

In fact, officials supervising the door-to-door waste collection programme say that the waste collection exercise is adversely hit for want of vehicles to lift collected waste from every door.
Ironically, when the municipality had kicked off the waste collection exercise departmentally in August last, the civic body had taken on hire three trucks to facilitate waste disposal. Since the entire waste collection exercise is taken over by the Self Help Groups, the municipality has stopped taking vehicles on hire, leaving the civic workers with no option other than to manage with the existing fleet.
“Door-to-door waste collection will succeed only if the cycle runs smoothly. How are the workers expected to lift the collected waste and dump it at Sonsodo without the vehicles? Two garbage compactors are lying in the municipal garage for want of repairs. Many a time bins are full to the brim with waste for want of timely lifting by the municipal vehicles,” remarked an official, while underlining the need for additional garbage collection vehicles to streamline the system.
