MARGAO: City-based NGO Green Goa Foundation has urged the Margao Municipal Council to remove encroachments in the old market area within 24 hours or face contempt proceedings in the High Court.
GGF Chairman Raison Almeida drew attention of the Chief Officer that a contempt petition is pending before the High Court, adding that any action of allotting space on the road and footpath for persons carrying out sale of items during the feast fair is yet another act of contempt of court.
Almeida pointed out that the MMC CO had last year suspended a municipal inspector for having violated HC order. He, however, hastened that the action was just eyewash as the inspector has been reinstated without any action being taken against him.
He told the media that the MMC has violated the HC order with impunity by allowing stalls on the footpaths. He said this year all furniture vendors have once again been allotted spaces along the footpath from the district court to the Fatorda circle.
