GIM to conduct family health survey in Goa

Survey to collect data on fertility, infant and child mortality, maternal and child health

PANJIM: Goa Institute of Management is conducting the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) for Goa and three other states. These include Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir. The sample size for Goa is 1520 households and is expected to be completed by 2016.
The general survey will have a sample of over 5,71,660 households from 28,583 sample units, across 640 districts.
The survey will collect data on fertility, infant and child mortality, maternal and child health, pre-natal mortality and adolescent reproductive health, family welfare, non-communicable diseases, HIV, domestic violence and sanitation which may be useful in evidence-based decision making and monitoring the progress of ongoing health and family welfare programmes in the country as well as in the States.
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched the first phase of the fourth round of the National Family Health Survey, known as NFHS-4 with the specific goals of providing data on health and family welfare for policy formulation. The main objective of the survey will be to acquire information on important emerging health and family welfare issues.
Prof  Adesh Chaturvedi, Associate Professor at GIM, who is spearheading the project with Prof Ajit Parulekar, Dean, Healthcare Management said, “The massive survey project involves the collection of data from over 5,71,660 households from 28,583 sample units across all the 640 districts of the country covering all the States and Union Territories.”
Professor Parulekar added that the last survey was done in 2005-06. “The findings of the present survey will be complete and made available by 2016, which is a decade after the previous survey. Therefore, this data will be extremely critical in understanding the health of the population and formulation of policies accordingly,” he said.
“It is very important that the nation is healthy. We at GIM are pleased to be a part of this process. Generally B-schools are approached for conducting various economic or industry related surveys. This is the only B-school to be involved in a social survey,” said Dr Joe Arun, director of GIM.
A field team of seven members will undergo a 28-day training programme at GIM’s Ribandar campus.
and will collect the data using Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) on mini laptops. Clinical Anthropometric Biochemical (CAB) data will also be collected that will include height, weight, blood pressure measurements besides anaemia, blood sugar and HIV.
This is first time, when district level estimates will be collected under NFHS, besides national and State data. All three previous NFHSs had given the state and national level data only.
