MARGAO: Goa Kisan Congress Committee on Tuesday demanded subsidy on fuel prices to all the farmers holding Krishi Card and the government should pay the pending amount of sugarcane farmers at the earliest.
Briefing the media persons at Margao, Abhijeet Desai along with Chanda Velip and Prakash Bhagat said the rise in fuel price has badly affected the farmers of Goa and the government should come out with relief, as they are already burdened with financial losses in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

“Maximum diesel is used by the farmers for various farming activities and the rise in diesel price has affected the farmers in a big way. In order to give relief, the government should provide subsidies on fuel to the farmers like others. Fishing trawlers and even bus operators are provided with the subsidies rates of fuel, then why not the farmers,” he questioned.
He said the government can cut off the taxes on the fuel so that the price can be reduced. “Farmers of Goa are already facing a tough time with regard to the pandemic, besides other costs. The government should look into the financial crunches of the farmers and give them relief at least on the fuel prices,” he added. Abhijeet said that the sugarcane farmers are in trouble, despite assurances from the government.
“The government has not paid the sugarcane farmers fully,” he stated.
He informed that hundreds of sugarcane farmers have not been paid by the government fully and there are more farmers whose cultivation is yet to be harvested, as the government had assured to pay by February 2021.
