PANJIM: The Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) has placed before the Public Health Department a proposal to shift all of its existing super specialty departments to one block. The project along with the existing specialties will also see three new ones.
The new specialties include Endocrinology, Medical Gastroenterology and Surgical Gastroenterology. These added facilities will allow for liver transplant surgeries in addition to the already existing procedures of kidney transplants.
Speaking about the project to Herald, GMC Dean Pradeep Naik said the process of upgradation of the hospital was in process and hoped for a positive response.
“Currently there are eight super specialties in different parts of the hospital that are fully equipped and functional and work on a day-to-day basis. The plan is to shift all of these to one block with an upgradation in three new specialties,” said Naik.
Also, as part of the project, Naik said incorporating a teaching atmosphere into the block was part of the plan.
“Part of the second plan we have for the block is to develop the infrastructure and system of teaching into the specialties. At the moment the existing ones are only service oriented and do not cater to teaching. Since we are involved in teaching as well we hope to inculcate this into the design as laid down by the Medical Council of India,” he said.
Funding for the project he added would be through a central scheme approximating a total cost of Rs 150 crore. As part of the scheme, the central government would provide Rs 120 crore, while the State will invest Rs 30 crore.
