PANJIM: In an apparent final approval for the Mopa airport, GMR Goa Airport Ltd signed a MoU with the Ministry of Civil Aviation for its construction, on Friday. Officials said the MoU is part of the concessionaire agreement signed between Goa government and GMR.
“The MoU is basically the agreement of the Central government’s support to the project, which is part of concessionaire agreement,” Director for Civil Aviation Suresh Shanbhogue told Herald. He said the MoU becomes necessary as airports are a central subject as they require various clearances from the Centre.
With the signing of the MoU all official formalities have been completed and GMR is set for a bhoomi poojan on April 10. However, Shanbhogue said he is not sure of the date for this but it is likely to begin in April. “GMR has already begun soil testing, ground leveling work etc and in April they are expected to start the actual work,” he said.
Asked about the bank guarantee GMR was to submit, Shanbhogue said, “It is almost done.”
