Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expressed his support for the recently passed Women’s Reservation Bill, which will reserve 13 constituencies for women in Goa. The Lok Sabha, in its new Parliament building, achieved an overwhelming majority vote in favour of the 128th Constitution Amendment Bill, also known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. This landmark bill aims to provide one-third of the seats for women in both the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that after the 2024 elections, crucial steps like census and delimitation exercises will be conducted to implement the reservation effectively. In the division vote required for a constitutional amendment bill, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced that 454 members voted in favour, with only 2 members opposing it. This substantial majority fulfils the requirement of a special majority, which necessitates approval by two-thirds of the members present and voting. This significant development marks the first bill passed in the new Parliament building.
