The Forest Department has identified a vast 6,729.54 hectares of land along the banks of the Mandovi and Zuari rivers as ecologically sensitive zones, highlighting the urgent need for conservation. This area, equivalent to over 6.72 crore square metres, has been mapped as environmentally fragile due to its vulnerability to degradation and human interference. In an official communication to the Town and Country Planning Department, authorities have called for strict action under existing TCP regulations to ensure these riverbank regions are adequately protected. The initiative follows directives from the state government aimed at preserving critical ecosystems and preventing unregulated development. Detailed mapping of these zones has already been completed, providing a clear framework for enforcement and monitoring. Officials believe that timely intervention will help maintain ecological balance, safeguard biodiversity, and reduce long-term environmental risks associated with construction and land-use changes in these sensitive areas.
