PANJIM: With no assured supply of animals for slaughter being one of the biggest hindrances for continuing its operation, the State’s sole abattoir located at Usgao, the Goa Meat Complex Limited (GMCL), the state-run corporation has decided to outsource its facility. The GMCL has been shut since October 2014.
The GMCL has invited online-global tender for use of entire capacity of the modern abattoir, for slaughtering of bovine animals, for an initial period of five years, tentatively from June 1, 2019 to May 31, 2024.
GMCL has got all the permissions like licences from Factories and Boilers, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and consent to operate from Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), mandatory for functioning of an abattoir.
The advertisement inviting tenders would be published in Gulf countries, with the last date for submitting tender document being March 28. The tenders will be opened on April 1.
Speaking to Herald, GMCL Managing Director Rajendra Prabhu Gaonkar said that a global tender has been invited from the desired agencies for taking over the entire capacity of GMLC at Usgao for slaughtering of animals. “The prime condition is that the agency should be able to fulfill the local meat demand through fresh slaughter every day,” he said.
He said that a minimum of 30 animals are required daily for slaughter for the abattoir to function. “The agency would be paid Rs 400 per animal,” Prabhu Gaonkar said.
“There will be no financial liability on the government once it is outsourced and materialised. State will get a hefty revenue and the private firm will undertake slaughter for local consumption,” the MD added.
The abattoir was last put in operation on August 22, 2018 on the occasion of Bakri Eid, with provisional licences.
