PANJIM: Swimming coach Surajit Ganguly, arrested for allegedly raping a minor trainee, was taken into custody by Goa Police on Saturday after he was produced before a court in New Delhi.
Ganguly, who hails from West Bengal, was arrested by police on Friday in Delhi, within 48 hours of a complaint being filed. The accused had been on the run since a case was filed against him, initially in Rishra Police Station in Hoogly district of West Bengal, and was later transferred to Mapusa police, where the incident took place.
“The accused was produced before Tis Hajari Court in New Delhi and three-day transit remand has been obtained by Goa Police,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Gajanan Prabhudesai informed media persons.
The accused has been booked for rape under Sections 506 (criminal intimidation), 376 (rape), 354 (molestation) of Indian Penal Code, Section 6 & 8 of POCSO and Section 8 of Goa Children’s Act. Prabhudesai said the accused will be produced before the Children’s Court for further remand, on being brought to Goa.
