PANJIM: Director General of Police (DGP) Jaspal Singh has instructed the Traffic Police to impose penalty on ‘visible violations’ only and refrain from harassing tourists. His instructions come a day after the Opposition benches questioned harassment to tourists driving rental vehicles in the State.

“Only visible violations be punished and vehicles particularly that of tourists should not be stopped. The tourists should leave Goa with happy memories,” DGP said after a review meeting attended by Inspector General of Police Omvir Singh, SP Traffic Shekhar Prabhudesai and other officers.
The DGP has also directed that no nakas be deployed on highways unless authorised by SP Traffic. Similarly, vehicles should not be stopped for paper checking, traffic signals be reviewed and their timings should be adjusted according to the intensity of traffic. So also, faulty signals may be rectified.
“Education and awareness be intensified and all two wheeler riders should be encouraged to wear helmet while riding two wheelers as most of the road fatalities occur of riders who are not wearing helmets,” he said.
The SP Traffic was also directed to review traffic system in important urban centres such as Vasco, Margao, Mapusa, Valpoi, etc and solve the problem of congestion.
DGP said that Goa has more vehicles than its population. It was also emphasised that people should be encouraged to use public transport.
