PANJIM: The Goa Police have formed separate teams to maintain strict vigil at railway tracks to prevent the migrant labourers from walking while taking this route to move out of the State.

The move also comes at a time when at least 16 migrants, hailing from Madhya Pradesh, were run over by a cargo train while they fell asleep on the railway tracks in Aurangabad.

The local authorities have been briefing a large group of migrant labourers housed at different shelter homes, about safe return to their respective States step-by-step.  “We have been briefing and convincing the labourers that they will be taken back to their States either by train or buses.  The government is ensuring their safe return,” a senior officer told Herald.

KTC buses have transported back several stranded passengers to States like Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, etc.

“The Railway Police have been asked to monitor the tunnels and tracks along with railway officials. They are given all that is required to patrol these areas. We are doing everything possible to ensure no mishap occurs in State,” the officer said.
