PANJIM: Bailancho Saad urged Goa police to handle women-related offences including cheating by family members with sensitivity.
During a discussion held on the eve of International Women’s Day on ‘Overcoming obstacles in women’s development’, the NGO members enlisted a list of problems faced by several women.
Director General of Police T N Mohan, who attended the discussion, assured to personally look into the cases and asked the NGO to submit details of all such cases to him.
One of those cases discussed at length was that of a widow who was jailed in a bank fraud case allegedly for no fault of her.
“He brother-in-law faked her signature and obtained the loan. She was not even aware of this. The bank filed a complaint and she had to go to jail. Moreover, she was able to get bail only after our intervention,” convenor Sabina Martins recalled. There were also allegations that the police do not verify several complaints before taking action.
DGP Mohan informed the gathering about Women Helpline Number 1091 dedicated exclusively for women in distress. The helpline was launched on January 7, 2013 after the safety of women on the streets became a major public issue nationwide against the backdrop of Delhi gang rape.
