PANJIM: In a bid to curb loud music in coastal areas at night, the Goa government has begun the process to enact its own Sound Pollution Act.
Currently, the State is following the Madhya Pradesh Sound Pollution Act which isn’t strong enough to penalise the culprits, authorities feel.
Speaking to Herald, Water Resources Minister Vinod Palienkar, who has begun a drive to ban loud music beyond 10 pm in his constituency, said he has taken up the matter with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.
“We are looking into the issue of sound pollution seriously and work has begun to enact our own Sound Act to curb the menace,” Palienkar said. He added, “The Madhya Pradesh Act, which is currently being followed, is not good enough.”
He said the noise has created major issues people in the area. “Students and senior citizens are most affected by sound pollution. In my constituency of Siolim, I have been successful in stopping parties as well as loud music,” he said.
