PANJIM: As the removal of overhead internet service cables from electricity poles continues, the Department of Information Technology (DIT) in Goa has decided to launch a portal to streamline the process of installing overhead internet cables. DIT has announced mandatory registration of internet service providers (ISPs) through a new online portal.

Following the conclusion of the contract for cable removal with an agency on December 31, 2024, the Electricity Department has embarked on an aggressive campaign to remove all cables installed on electricity poles. The disconnection has led to disruptions, particularly affecting office connectivity in the state capital.
To address the issue of frequent telecom line disruptions and the implementation of the new Telecom Right of Way (ROW) Rules 2024, a meeting was held under the chairmanship of IT Minister Rohan Khaunte. The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Dr V. Candavelou, the Secretary of Information Technology, and officials from the Electricity Department.
Prasanna Acharya, Director of the DIT, stated, “A portal will be launched to streamline the management of overhead internet cables on electricity poles. ISPs can apply online, and the processing of applications will be handled by the IT department, in line with Goa’s IT policy. This initiative will resolve all issues related to cable installations.”
Meanwhile, the Electricity Department has launched an aggressive campaign against the indiscriminate installation of cables on electricity poles. Engineers have pointed out several problems arising from these unregulated installations. Executive Engineer Kashinath Shetye announced, “We will begin an aggressive campaign against unauthorised cables, and from February 1, we will remove
all cables.”
