PANJIM: Goa tops with 217.7 accidents per lakh population in last year’s road accident road chart released by the Transport Research Wing of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
The lowest accidents occur in Lakshadweep at 1.2 followed by Nagaland at 3.2, against an all-India average of 37.9.
The study conducted by the Goa Traffic Cell, the maximum number of person killed were due to motorcycle accidents and almost 35 per cent of the accidents of total were self-accidents, of which majority were due to the drunken driving in the State.
The self-accidents are claimed to be taking place due to easy availability of liquor at cheap rates.
This year, there was a steep rise in the number of accidents in of Colva area by almost 50 per cent, followed by Anjuna, Saligao, Quepem and Calangute.
Till September this year, Traffic Cell booked over 2200 cases of drunken driving, while over 90 per cent accidents occurred due to rash and negligence driving, with maximum accidents taking place between 5 pm to 6 pm. Over 33 per cent of accidents occurred on the national highway, while straight roads accounted for 75.42 per cent accidents and on turns and curved roads it was 19.91 per cent.
Not all accidents in the state take place due to rash and negligence driving, as some also occur due to the bad engineering and blind curves on the roads. Tourists are among the majority of the victims, who fall prey to the dangers of curvy roads.
The Traffic Cell of Goa sends the proposal of their survey to the Public Works Department to improve the infrastructure and the roads at the particular areas every year. In 2016 it was 58, whereas in 2015 it was 53.
Not only highways, we also give each and every road detail where accidents take place due to the faulty roads, an official said.
Maximum accidents have registered in Margao followed by Ponda, Mapusa, Porvorim and Verna.
Margao also tops in the number of fatalities followed by Pernem, Maina Curtorim, Bicholim and Ponda. Again Margao also tops in two-wheeler accidents followed with Mapusa, Ponda, Porvorim and Cuncolim.
Maximum truck accidents have witnessed in Ponda, followed Mapusa, Maina Curtorim, Pernem and Collem, while Verna tops in car accidents followed by Porvorim, Agassaim, Panjim and Margao.
