PANJIM: In a fresh move to overhaul the syllabi at undergraduate level for creating employable opportunities to students, Goa University (GU) has mooted for introducing Choice Based Credit System wherein students have liberty to pick optional subjects of their interest and aptitude.
The proposal comes following guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) across all universities pan-India asking it to implement the new system in the curriculum. “The implementation will follow after consulting representatives of various stakeholders including teachers, Principals and Deans of Faculties. A committee will be constituted for this purpose,” the varsity Registrar Prof Vijayendra P Kamat told Herald.
Under the new system – that aims at providing students opportunities matching their scholastic needs and aspiration, allow them to choose subjects from a wide range of elective courses besides the compulsory subjects under a specific subject specialization offered by the institutions. While it also allows undergoing additional/value added courses and acquire more than required number of credits, depending upon his or her aptitude.
The term ‘credit’ defines the quantum of contents/syllabus prescribed for a course and determines the minimum number of teaching-learning hours required. One credit denotes 15 hours of instructions per semester in case of theory course. “It is advantageous as it opens up possibilities for students pursuing skills and courses of their choice to enhance their employability,” the GU Registrar said.
Though students can choose courses of inter-disciplinary nature, the required courses for majoring in a subject will ensure depth. Students will also have the facility of shifting to another university in any part of the country for particular duration of that program as envisaged by the UGC if choice based credit system operates throughout the country. Kamat added if a student can cope up he/she has wider choices outside their discipline of their study.
With an attempt to transform from the traditional type of learning, the CBCS was endorsed during a recently held meeting of all state education ministers in Delhi in Jan-2015.
