MARGAO: The Goan Seamen Association of India has vowed to work for better treatment, respect and dignity from the State Government for their seafarers’ community.
This message was sent out on Thursday June 25, International Seafarers Day. The Goan Seamen Association of India has given out a message to all its seafarers that the GSAI has been and will continue to be on the forefront of the fight to get the much needed respect and dignity for seafarers and has assured to continue whatever may be the consequences.

“Most of our Goan seamen work in the cruise/merchant shipping industry for many decades now. Their hard work and commitment has won them laurels for decades cementing their place in this industry. It is estimated that more than twenty five thousand Goans are employed directly in this industry and contribute significantly to the economic prosperity of the State in the form of remittances and indirect taxes as a result of the enhanced purchasing power of their families,” said GSAI president Frank Viegas.
“It is time to say in one voice, whatever be our banners, that Goan seafarers deserve better treatment, respect and dignity from the State Government and its people for their tremendous contribution to the State’s economic and social growth and development,” said Frank.
“We request the Indian and Goan governments to do everything possible to get back safely the last Goan stranded in any part of the world. GSAI will not rest till we have all Goan seafarers back safe and sound to their anxious families. We take this opportunity to thank profusely all those who contributed their mite to bring back our stranded seafarers thus far,” Frank vowed.
