PONDA: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said on Saturday that Goan students were not competitive in exams at the national level and gave them four mantras to be successful.
Speaking at Kavlem, he said, successful students should have the ability to observe, analyse and apply his or her mind to understand any situation beyond the books. This would help them understand the reality of life.
In his second mantra to students, he said, students should not be an expert in his subject but also have the confidence to digest failures in life. He cited an example of a student in Ponda taluka who committed suicide merely because her name was not declared. The incident took place in 2012 and he went on to say the girl had secured the highest mark in the Board exams of HSC.
Having no confidence, she committed suicide fearing that she failed in exams, he said.
He said as the chief minister he was shocked by this incident where the student did not have the ability to digest the circumstances. He said it was much more important to be able to absorb shock than success.
The third mantra was the importance of gaining knowledge. He said the students had to go beyond study books and visit the library to read books on other topics other than just study. This knowledge, he said, would not be useless but enrich their experience.
In his fourth mantra, he said, everyone remains a student till the last breadth he or she draws. He was speaking at the felicitation function of meritorious students of Shree Shanradurga Shikshan Samithi (SSS).On the occasion present were PWD Minister Sudin Davlikar along with many other political dignitaries.
