MARGAO: The Congress on Saturday criticised the State Government for not celebrating the Opinion Poll Day at the state level.
At a ceremony to commemorate the day, veterans who worked during the Opinion Poll namely N Shivdas, Joaquim D’Costa, and Francis Goes were felicitated by CLP leader Digambar Kamat.
The Congress on the occasion garlanded the photos of Purshottam Kakodkar and Dr Jack Sequeira and remembered Shabu Desai, who had worked during the Opinion Poll.
GPCC president Girish Chodankar said, “Today is the anniversary of the historic Opinion Poll Day, but contrary to the significance of the day the Central and State governments are not listening to the opinion of Goans. This government doesn’t celebrate the day at the State level. 2017 mandate was an opinion against the BJP but they did not listen.”
“If the BJP was in power instead of MGP during the Opinion Poll, even after winning the Opinion Poll we would have merged with Maharashtra. Their history is that kind,” Girish charged.
“BJP ideology is not to respect the opinion of the people. Goans are celebrating the Opinion Poll Day but not Goa Government,” he alleged.
Digambar Kamat said, “The strong decision of Goans in protecting the identity of Goa means Opinion Poll. Like today, Goans came together to protect Goa in the past. In Shel-Melauli there is a massive uprising. The villagers decided to oppose the project and the government had to recall its decision. The Goans are faced with the question of protecting Goenkarponn and the identity of Goa. Congress is trying to get Goans united,” Digambar added.
