PANJIM: Goa’s education sector continued to occupy Grade II in the Performance Grading Index (PGI), released by the Union Education Ministry, for the second consecutive year in 2019-20. With 783 score, the coastal State had similar grade in 2018-19.

Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank on Sunday approved the release of the PGI 2019-20, according to which nineteen States and UTs have shown improvement by 10 per cent (36 points) or more in the PGI: Governance process.
Overall analysis shows, except for Goa, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, all other States and UTs have shown improvement. While Goa’s performance remained constant, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have shown decline.
The index grades States and Union Territories on a set of 70 parameters to assess and catlyse transformational change in the field of education. Five States and Union Territories namely Punjab, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Kerala occupy the highest grade (Grade A++) for 2019-20.
Goa, which was at Grade III in 2017-18, improved occupied Grade II in 2018-19 and continued the position in 2019-20. The coastal State ranks in the first ten States in the GGI Domain: Infrastructure and Facilities (7 rank) and Education Access (9 rank).
Under the Governance Process domain, State occupied 27 rank with a score of 229 out of 360 while on equity it ranked 28th with 209 score out of 200.
First published in 2019 for the year 2017-18, PGI as an exercise aims to undertake multi-pronged interventions that could help various States and administration to reach the desired goals vis a vis education. The report also helps as a good source of information of best practices followed by other States and UTs. The aim is to help States/ UTs to pinpoint the areas of concerns and learning gaps and effectively bridge them.
