PANJIM: Even as the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had stated last year that the state government will make it mandatory that all tourist vehicles – ‘rent-a-cab’ and ‘rent-a-bike’ shall be electric vehicles (EVs) from January 1 2024, the proposal is yet to be implemented.
Sources in the Transport Department said that the process of registration of electric vehicles for rental services is yet to be started and whatever vehicles are being registered, they all are for diesel or petrol vehicles.

“The vehicles for rent-a-cab and rent-a-bike services being registered are petrol and diesel only. There was a proposal to do so but it is yet to be implemented,” a senior official said.
The official also said that number of electric vehicles purchased for government departments too is negligible.
While addressing the inaugural ‘Energy Transition Working Group’ meeting on enabling policies to accelerate e-mobility in July last year, the Chief Minister had said that state government will make it mandatory for all tourist ‘rent-a-cab’ and ‘rent-a-bike’ services registered from January 1, 2024 to be electric vehicles.
He had also announced that the new government light motor vehicles purchased from January 2024 will mandatorily be EVs.
The Chief Minister had pointed at vehicle density in the state was 4.5 times higher than the national average largely on the account of tourism.
