Goencho Avaaz calls for united fight against Mhadei diversion

PANJIM:  The Goencho Avaaz (GA) has appealed to all the 40 legislators to join hands for a united fight against the Central government and Karnataka’s plan to divert River Mhadei, which would have a cascading impact on Goa and its people.

“Our legislators need to learn from Karnataka MLAs, who despite having lot of difference politically, always stand united when it comes to fight with other States for water sharing and to protect the interest of their State,” Fernandes added.
“All the 40 MLAs, leaving behind their differences, should come together on single platform and show our power. Divided we will not be able to fight. We also request our three MPs to also join us in our fight to save Mhadei,” he added.
Fernandes said that political parties should avoid resorting to any drama of one-upmanship for personal and political gains, thereby harming the greater cause of saving the river.
The NGO has decided to wait for the outcome of all-party delegation meeting with Union Minister  MOEF&CC Prakash Javdekar, before deciding on future course of action.
Speaking further, co-convenor Swapnesh Sherlekar condemned the Centre’s decision to grant consent to Karnataka’s Kalsa-Banduri project. He alleged that the move is completely political, taking keeping an eye on upcoming by-elections on 28 seats in Karnataka.
“This shows that Central government is least bothered about Goa and its people,” said Sherlekar, while urging the CM  to be firm on his stand that the consent should be withdrawn.
