Goencho Avaaz sends out call for second liberation of Goa

Wants liberation to protect fields, orchards, rivers, beaches and from evils of corruption, drugs, rapes

PANJIM: Goencho Avaaz is set to launch a movement for the ‘second liberation’ to bring in a change in liberated Goa for future generations, with a public meeting scheduled on December 19 at Mapusa.
Addressing media persons, Goencho Avaaz co-convenor Captain Viriato Fernandes said that though Goa will celebrate its 57th anniversary of Liberation from Portuguese colonial rule, the question is are we really liberated?
“After 57 years of governance by our own rulers, are we free? Do we feel secure in our own land? Are we safe from the three main elements of life that is air, water and food? Everything is just polluted,” he said.
He said that Goa is known for gambling, drugs, prostitution and all kind of illicit activities. “The time has come for a second liberation that will preserve our environment for future generations. A liberation to protect our fields, orchards, rivers, beaches and liberation from all evils of corruption, drugs, rapes, gambling, etc,” Fernandes stated.
The meeting will be held at Mapusa taxi stand from 3.30pm onwards on December 19.
Fernandes said the meeting will be addressed by some eminent speakers from various fields highlighting the issues faced by the people today. The meeting will also pass certain resolutions.
