PORVORIM: Under the Employment Exchange Act of 1969, the private sector is under no obligation to employ Goans, St Andre Viresh Borkar said, even as the Labour Minister pointed to various training, career guidance and apprenticeship programmes, the government is undertaking and there is high unemployment in Goa. Labour Minister Atanasio Monserrate admitted that the government does not have bifurcated data, as to how many Goans and non Goans are employed in the private sector. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant agreed to amend the Act to employ Goans.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that the Employment Exchange Act will be amended in consultation with industry to employ Goans. Labour Minister Atansio Monserrate said that 1884 were given offer letters for jobs and 236 were given offers for placement as a result of training. Viresh Borkar said only 1511 Goans were employed under 96 projects approved by the Investment Promotion Board since 2018, when Goa has such a high unemployment ratio in the country.
