Government machinery on its toes ahead of polls on Tuesday

CANACONA: With just little over a day left for the polling for the Lok Sabha elections begins in Goa, the government machinery is on its toes working overtime in Canacona in preparation of peaceful polling process before and during the elections. 
Since the election commission announced model code of conduct on March 10, Canacona police have till now seized liquor either stored or transported illegally in the jurisdiction of Canacona taluka in 12 raids worth Rs 28 lakh.
A total of 25 matka agents were booked under Gambling Act during the same period while in a narcotic raid one alleged drug peddler was arrested for possessing narcotic substances. 
With all the candidates contesting the South Goa MP seat and their supporters restraining themselves to peaceful conduct till now no untoward incident related to electioneering, a source at Canacona police station said. 
Canacona has 61 polling booths scattered all over the taluka which has about 35 thousand registered voters and with about 80% of the voters expected to cast their votes the law enforcement agencies are seen making elaborate arrangements so that no untoward incident takes place till voting gets over, Tuesday evening. 
A sizeable pose of armed police personnel drawn from Kerala armed forces is seen deployed at Polem check post and at mamlatdar office building at Chaudi where Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are stored.
Sources also told this correspondent that looking at the strict implementation and importance in holding the election, all the police personnel at Canacona police station are reportedly on duty and leave to any of the staff stands cancelled.
