Govt committed to women emancipation: CM

Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat has said that his government is committed to women emancipation and made an appeal to the women folk to rally behind the Congress which has traditionally stood for women empowerment.
He was addressing a large gathering of women at a mahila convention organised by the Fatorda Block Congress Committee and the Goa Mahila Congress and the Mahila Shakti Abhiyan at Fatorda.
He said that the network of Self Help Groups started by PCC general secretary Vijay Sardesai needed to avail of the government schemes for improving the lot of women folk in Fatorda.
In his address, Home Minister, Ravi Naik outlined the various novel schemes initiated by his government towards women empowerment. He said the government was committed to improve the lot of the needy women and their families by imparting various skills and techniques by which the women could supplement income and support their families.
Power Minister, Aleixo Sequeira called upon the women to support the Congress and strengthen the hands of Congress President Sonia Gandhi in the coming Lok Sabha polls.
He said Ms Gandhi was committed to women reservation in Assemblies and Parliament, adding that no other party other than the Congress could do justice to the women community.
In his address, GPCC general secretary Vijay Sardessai said it was unfortunate that actually women continued to be worse off than men, adding that it was in this regard that the Congress supported women reservation in Assemblies and parliament.
Sardessai said unity amongst Congress workers had led to a huge margin during the last Lok Sabha by-polls inspite of best efforts by vested interests to spread canards and sabotage the campaign.
GPCC secretary Farrel Futado and others also spoke at the meeting.
Four prominent women of Fatorda, Dr Myrtle Caldeira, Farida Shaikh, Vatsala Wadekar and Jane Fernandes were felicitated at the hands of Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat.
