PANJIM, AUG 3
PWD Minister Churchill Alemao on Tuesday assured the House that his Department has considered the proposal for a railway overbridge at Kalay in Sanguem and would pursue the same with the railway authorities.
Alemao was replying to a calling attention motion by Sanguem MLA Vasudev Gaonkar, who made a case for the bridge citing the unfortunate July 20 train accident in Comba, Margao, where a school student was crushed under a running train.
Vasudev said around 8,000 people reside in Kalay and surrounding areas. The village is divided by the rail line and as a result school children and office goers have to cross the same to reach their homes, he observed.
He said it was dangerous to cross the line in the rainy season. The railway overbridge will be great help during such times, he stated.
The MLA pointed apart from Kalay the villages of Molem, Sancordem and Dabal would also benefit from the bridge. Villagers would greatly benefit as the bridge will also curtail commuting distance, he added.
Vasudev said the State Government needs to contribute 50 per cent of the total cost for constructing the bridge while the railways will add the remaining share.
Alemao admitted that the Comba accident was most unfortunate and the department had received a proposal from the railways for construction of the overbridge at Kalay.
He said the Government was committed towards the safety of people and considered the project at Kalay on the basis of fund-sharing pattern in the ratio of 50:50.
