Govt constitutes human rights panel, finally

After dilly-dallying for years, the Goa Government has finally constituted the State Human Rights Commission.
The notification to the effect was issued by Governor Dr S S Sidhu.
The Governor has appointed Justice Praful Kumar Mishra, former Chief Justice of Patna High Court, as the chairman of the Goa State Human Rights Commission.
Mr A D Salkar, former district judge in Goa is the member of the Goa State Human Rights Commission.
The appointments were made on the recommendations of the State Government.
The notification will come into effect from the date the duo assumes charge of their office.
Goa was one of the nine other States who were yet to constitute State Human Rights Commission.
The Centre and the NHRC have been requesting to all those States, which have not yet constituted their State Commission, to do so.
Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Uttarakhand are the other States that have not yet constituted State Human Rights Commission.
The Government of India and National Human Rights Commission are keen that every State sets up a Human Rights Commission, the Minister said.
Protection and promotion of human rights constitute the principal concern of the Commission, the Centre states.
