PANJIM: Following a series of allegations about growing irregularities and lack of services at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), the BJP-led government is contemplating the possibility of appointing an administrator for the effective management and improvement of the healthcare delivery in the hospital.
Speaking to media persons on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Health Francis D’Souza explored the possibility of appointing an administrator saying, “The issue cannot be just solved by appointing a committee. That can be done with experts but GMC needs a full-fledged administrator, who will look into only the administrative work and ensure that the best health care service is delivered to people.”
“GMC is a big complex covering medical college, 1200-bed hospital, dental hospital, girls’ hostel, etc. To look into effective functioning of all these sectors, we need one dedicated officer like administrator,” the deputy chief minister added.
Pointing to the water shortage issue at GMC, D’Souza said the government is working on a proposal to have separate bore wells for each unit like GMC main hospital, college, dental college and other heads. “We are already in talks with Water Resources Department, who has for now agreed for one bore well,” he said.
Maintaining that there is a lot of wastage of water in the hospital, mostly by visitors, D’Souza said there is complete mismatch in the water quantity figures provided by GMC and Public Works Department (PWD). “While PWD claims that it supplies sufficient water to cater to the need, GMC says that the water they receive is not enough,” he said.
“Somewhere there is a mismatch. There could be a possibility that the underground water tanks have got a leakage. This is just a possibility,” he said.
