‘Govt playing with sentiments of Catholics’

MARGAO: Adv Rajiv Gomes who is defending the accused in the Velim Church attack has criticised the government for allegedly playing with the sentiments of the Catholic community in the State.

The advocate is anguished over the alleged flip flop which the State government has made in the case by challenging the order of relief to the accused in the case. The case will now be heard on February 6.
The Velim Church attack case came for hearing on Friday at the JMFC court. The Director of Prosecution has made correspondence to the Court challenging the previous order of the JMFC which had dropped the charges of attempt to murder and other serious charges against the accused in the case.
Now, the Public Prosecutor at the Sessions Court Sarojini Sardinha has filed a review petition at the Session Court on the directions of the Director of Prosecution.
The advocate for the accused said, “The Court had granted relief by dropping proceedings under and 307 and others after the argument. The state has always been making promises to the Catholic community of dropping the charges and now it is clear that they had no intention and were fooling the people all the time.”
If they had the intention to drop the charges, then, they would have never filed a revision application challenging the order of relief which was a good order,” he said.
“I don’t understand the logic when the say they want to challenge. I feel that the State is playing with the sentiments of the Catholic community,” Adv Gomes said. The Cuncolim Police had in 2015 indicted 22 in the case.
 under Section 307, besides Sections 143, 144, 147, 148, 186, 323, 324, 326, 332, 333, 341, 342, 353 read with Section 149 IPC for the church attack case.
Ahead of the last assembly elections, on February 26, 2012, the then special branch officers PSI Kapil Nayak along with head constables Krishnanand Rane and Kuldeep Desai while in the Velim Church got caught up in between intimidated locals and led to tension which ended up in 5 policemen being injured, two of them seriously, after being allegedly attacked by Velim locals.
