MARGAO: There’s finally good news in store for the Cuncolim flood victims whose compound walls came crashing down on the day of floods on July 2.
Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik has said that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has promised him that the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation would rebuild the compound walls damaged in the floods. “After I took up the issue of compound walls with the chief minister when the victims received a meager compensation of Rs 6500, Parrikar has assured me that the GSICD will re-build all the walls”, he said.
When his attention was drawn to the expiry of his 15-day time frame sought by him to get the damaged compound walls rebuilt, Rajan said the process is currently underway and the GSIDC will rebuild the walls as per the chief minister’s assurance.
Replying to another question, the Cuncolim MLA said the chief minister has also promised to grant additional relief to the Cuncolim flood victims from the Chief Minister Relief Fund. “Even I agree that the compensation awarded to the victims was meager. That’s the reason, I have taken up the issue with the chief minister who has agreed to sanction additional relief from the CM’s relief fund,” he added.
Government’s decision to rebuild the damaged compound walls through GSIDC assumes significance given that the Corporation had come under sustained attack from the victims and citizens alike, holding the agency responsible for what they called as the “man-made” floods at Sanvorcotto on July 2.
Meanwhile, the Cuncolim MLA said that work on the Sanvorcotto culvert will commence later this month or next month once the rain subsides.
